De La Salle edges Newark Memorial in NCS Division I boys basketball showdown
Chace Bryson - Contra Costa Times - 3/7/2010

A little more than a year after being bounced from the North Coast Section Division I playoffs in a semifinal upset, the De La Salle High basketball team won its eighth NCS title with a 40-37 victory Saturday over Newark Memorial — the very team that ended the Spartans' season 12 months earlier.

De La Salle (27-2) used its trademark defense to smother the top-seeded Cougars at Saint Mary's College. Newark entered the game ranked No. 4 in the state by CalHiSports.com.

"We made defensive stops," Spartans coach Frank Allocco said. "That's been our story all year. Newark is a great team. They have a lot of offensive firepower, all that we could do was neutralize it and we made some key plays and key rebounds down the stretch."
